GAAAAAAAH! UPDATE, DAMMIT!

At the end of the day, it didn’t make a lot of sense to have all the places to write that I did. So I’ve consolidated. I still have some work to do around here, but …

Doesn’t seem that long.

This is mainly for reasons directly related to my blood pressure. There are … things I would say there that I don’t need everyone and their mother knowing. Feel free to friend me on Twitter, but I will probably be choosy with who I friend in return. ‘kay? ‘kay.

1. I’ve been categorizing the As-Yet Unfiled Entries over the last month. I’ll finish next week. I finally made it happen by just putting a recurring task in Tasks Pro to do 15 a day. I started with 450+ and am now down to 90. 29 Jan: DONE!
2. I killed the nested categories today. Took a lot of SQL to map nested categories back to their parents, then create tags with WP’s category-to-tag converter. Sucked having to do that by hand, though. One would think that the category-to-tag importer would have an option for doing just that in the conversion; most people that had nested categories, like me, would probably go to the device of parent category as category, child categories as tags. Meh.
3. I’ve been moving some stuff over from GFMorris.com. That took more SQL-fu, but I finally had an a-ha moment with joins today. I mean, I generated a working join on my own. It was a nice moment to understand WTF the syntax was doing for once.

Been a good thing to occupy time during conference calls today…

I’ve tried to find a WordPress plugin that chooses to show ads only to those folks coming in from Google, or perhaps only to people who don’t already have a comment on the site [as the comment sets a cookie locally], but … no dice.

1645: I ran the numbers, and the “not even close” is like $1500. :wince: Why do I do this again?

This was the perfect I’m-sick-and-don’t-want-to-deal-with-anyone task. Honestly, I feel a whole lot better today; I think my left ear will be fairly cleared up by tomorrow, enough that I could go to work and function normally. Ever since Friday night, I’ve been stressed on how I’d work at the office, since … well, it would be hard to answer the phone, and I do a lot of that. But I hear a whole lot better in my left ear today, and my right ear seems to be improving as well [although the wick has come out of it, so I probably need to go back and have another re-inserted].

And yes, I know about the ob_gzhandler issue, folks. It’s intermittent, and I haven’t even begun to have the time to debug.

In other fun news, STS-121 is now on for a 1 Jul launch, Ghana defeated the Czechs, and the U.S. is tied in the 35th minute with the Italians. Esta vida es buena.

I will spend tonight and tomorrow morning making backups onto the NAS account I have; I do this routinely anyway, but the HD that’s failing is the backup HD, which makes it kinda hard for me to trust its backups.

Thankfully, no data has been lost. You may proceed to watch me lose my shit all weekend long at rocksmyfaceoff.info.

The only complaint I really have right now is that the datestamps are set in GMT, but posts are made here in Central time … so the link dates are all foofy. Bad ju-ju. I’ve reset del.icio.us’s XML-RPC bot to spit stuff out at 0900 GMT every day, which will always be in the middle of the night here, at a time when I’m almost guaranteed to be in bed and asleep. That seems like the perfect time for a bot to do its dirty work—when I’ve got clean edges on either side. [I sometimes wonder if stuff I post after 2200 will make it into the nightly dumps. No, I'm not kidding.]

Yes, yes, I’m neurotic. This is news?

Well, I know what the reason is, and it’s a case of tools influencing me. The tipping point for me today was looking at the entry touting the narrative shift change over at Dan Benjamin’s Hivelogic, a Weblog I read for a while, but stopped reading—probably partially due to Dan’s use of second-person narrative. As I was following Dan Cederholm’s rabbit trail to the Hivelogic paradigm shift, it suddenly hit me: everyone comes up with these cool little site names, and I quickly shift them back to people’s names when I add them to FeedLounge. For example, Hivelogic is titled “Dan Benjamin’s Hivelogic”, which tells me both the name of the writer and the name of the site.

I’m not wholly consistent in doing this—I’ll admit that I’ve gone too far in forcing a name-only convention; I’ll repent—but I really seem to like it. And so I present you … Geof F. Morris’s Indiana Jones School of Management.

Note that wp_title() has a default separator of » that will trip you up if you don’t know it’s there, and the separator shows up before the post title. [Not good, I say!] If you put make it wp_title(”), though, you won’t have a separator at all. You’ll need to hardcode a separator between wp_title() and bloginfo(), though.

I’d been meaning to do that for a while.

I jokingly suggested this the other day on the Rumor Forum, and then … I just felt like I shouldn’t be joking about it. I fired an email off to Derek, and he told me that he’d support me. Derek’s been working with Blood:Water and raising money for them out on tour for some time now.
