GNM: Wilco, 2004-11-15: The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA, USA

I got this off of ViaChicago’s old tracker, which is long since dead. :pours out a 40 for my dead homies: But hey, WilcoBase says that lots of folks at etree have it. So … have fun. Here’s what I have:

Source: WilcoWorld webcast mixed with 2 separate mono minidisc recordings.

minidisc rigs: Sony MZ-R50 with Core Sound binaural microphones
(Paul (left channel) and Craig (right channel) had approx 10-20′ separation during the show)
minidisc transfer: Hafler DH110 preamp > Audiowerks sound card > PC > WAV

Webcast audio was used as the primary, and the left mono audience was mixed into the left webcast channel. Right mono audience was mixed into the right webcast channel. The ratio was 2:1 (audience : webcast)

This show was part of a whirlwind long weekend. My friend Marcus and I saw Superchunk at the Cat’s Cradle on Wednesday night (April 27), and then took off at 3 AM for Columbia to catch the first of the final four Uncle Tupelo shows. We drove straight through, getting to town at 5 PM. The bill that night was Blue Mountain, the Bottle Rockets playing acoustic and debuting some of the songs from BROOKLYN SIDE, and then UT. UT’s set was pretty standard for this tour, with the highlight being Brian Henneman coming out for the second encore.

Sound is good on this, though it is not quite as crisp as I’d like. The PA at the Blue Note was always “mushy” back in those days, even if you you were right up close.

Sadly no longer on DIME, but so good that I’ll definitely re-seed upon request.

GNM: Matt Costa, 2008-05-29: Fox Theatre, Boulder, CO, USA

This recording is still extant on DIME, and as I’ve already listened to it, I can tell you that it’s very much worth your while. I bought two Costa CDs as a result of listening to it last night.

Now, the recording I had was available on DIME but is no longer; that said, WilcoBase indicates that this show is available on etree. So there’s that.

GNM: Over the Rhine, 2007-08-31: Moonlite Gardens, Cincinnati, OH, USA

Over the Rhine’s got a great backlog on Archive.org, and this show is a part of it.

matrix:

both:cardreader>CEPro2.0>CDWav>FLAC(level8)

processing included auto-conversion to 32b.f. format, EQ, mixing, fades, Waves L2 with dither to 16 bits.

I love me some SBD/AUD matrices … enough that I was awful excited today when TEAC/Tascam called me to tell me where they were in repairing my DR-1. Woooo! Anyhow, ShawnF does good work, too.

release2007-08-31: Moonlite Gardens, Coney Island, Cincinnati, OH, USA (disc 1) and release2007-08-31: Moonlite Gardens, Coney Island, Cincinnati, OH, USA (disc 2) will get you all the metadata goodness!

GNM: Randall Goodgame’s Bluebird

Randall Goodgame

Geof gave us this album not too long ago and I rolled my eyes because he’s pushed his Christian version of “crying in my beer music” on us before. I am totally eating those words because there is nothing better and brighter (or less “crying in my beer”) than this song.

Misty, talking about music. She was referring to fellow Square Peg Eric Peters, but I’ve introduced her to this guy, too. [And she will want to borrow my copy as soon as she reads this, I expect.]

Admittedly, I listen to sad music. To quote Linford Detweiler, “Sad music makes me happy.” But I don’t find Randall Goodgame’s new EP, Bluebird, to be sad at all—even when listening to “Heaven Waits”, which is one way Randall processed Hurricane Katrina. I’ve heard some of these songs previously, and I’ve been waiting for a new RG record for some time—and even with just six tracks, this does not disappoint! Of course, I can say that because I was at the live-band release show. :) [And yes, I have a recording. I'll get to it when I'm not working six days a week.]

I can’t afford to put you on the payroll, so free CDs will have to do until then!

And that’s totally cool, Jill. :)

You can get this album on Amazon.com [256kbps MP3s, for $8.99], or you can use ye olde NoiseTrade to get it for free. But unlike me and Ronzilla, you don’t get a free CD and a hug from Jill. ;)

I remember reading about Jill’s debut CD eons ago when the earth’s crust was still cooling—okay, it was in college—and I find it very funny that I’m now fairly well acquainted with her.

She’s an honest artist, a caring person, and a heartfelt songwriter. I don’t know what to tell you other than that.

GNM: Andy Gullahorn’s Reinventing the Wheel

By Andy Gullahorn

By Andy Gullahorn

I was goofing off on Facebook today, playing Word Twist, when I realized that I better, oh, listen to Andy Gullahorn’s record if I was gonna play him in WT. ;) [Andy, thank you for comping me the CD. You might say that I should thank Jill. I'm thanking you because you're big and can kick my butt. Jill can just slap me like it's a soap opera.]

Andy has a whole page about RtW on his site, which links to reviews, lyrics, where to buy it, and the like. Two worth reading are Christianity Today’s review and my friend Brandon’s review. I’ve listened to the record as I played Gully in Word Twist [dangit, he's better than me ... sad panda] and as I wrote this, and I must say … I really like it.

GNM: Travis, 2000-09-21: Quest, Minneapolis, MN, USA

Sadly, this one isn’t available at DIME anymore, but I’ll honor reseed requests left in the comments.

GNM: Radiohead’s Amnesiac

Falling in love with In Rainbows made me have my a-ha moment with Radiohead, so now I’m going back through their back catalog to fully appreciate their immense talent. [Or be disappointed. But I'm betting not.]

[And yes, this means I powered through a listen of the Pumpkins already.]

Geof’s New Music: A New Era

I’m totally changing how I do GNM. In short:

  • No more weekly posts on Sunday. I’ll add music whenever I feel like it. This means that some weeks will be full of music, and sometimes, well, I’ll be too busy to add. It’ll be like the rest of the content on this Weblog. ;)
  • I only add stuff one at a time.
  • I can’t add anything until the backlog of the last one is rated.

Also as a rule, I’m not going to go back and back-link the previous run. If you want to know what I thought about a recording, just ask in the comments. [If nothing else, this will push me to listen to stuff when I'm stuck. ;) ]

Anyhow, so what I’m doing this week is the Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness demos by The Smashing Pumpkin that were mastered by Internet master-mind thir13en: releaseMCIS Demos I and releaseMCIS Demos II. The torrent I downloaded them from on DIME is no longer extant, but I’ll honor reseed requests left in the comments.
