Onward Autumn

When I fold the cold in my jet-lag palm
When I soak so long I forget my mother
Will I set the sun
On a big-wheeled wagon?
Oh I’m bragging
I’m always in love

It’s a drag I sang
Oh I’m always in love
I’m worried
I’m always in love

Oh I’m worried
I’m worried
I’m worried
I’m always in love

“I’m Always in Love”, Wilco, Summerteeth

In literature, spring is the season of love: birds sing, grass grows green, flowers bud, girls put away their bulky sweaters. [Not that they aren't cute in them, because they are.]

In my world, though, I always associate fall with love. In talking with Jeff about it, he and I both see fall as a time of renewal … probably because we both spent some time finishing school and are still both associated with our respective universities. [Dammit, I never took Latin, so I have no idea what the plural of alma mater is. Bobbitt says it's alma matres. If he's wrong, blame him ... and laugh at me for being stupid while you're at it.]

It never fails, though … I get all a-twitter when the first chilly night’s crisp air cuts through the sweltering sizzle of summer. If any of you say that this has anything to do with Gilmore Girls, I’ll hit you. Hard. [Not that admitting that you like GG is a bad thing, at least not according to Michael Barrish. ;)]

So anyway … when the calendar rolls past that glorious autumnal equinox, know that my heart beats a little faster, that my spirit picks up a little, that my step is a bit springier, and that … well, I’m more of an idiot than normal.

1723 22-Sep-2005 can’t come fast enough. Bring on the fall!

The seasons have traditionally been associated with their position in the growing season (thus spring is associated with new beginnings, etc.). However, most of us probably associate the seasons a lot more strongly with school. Thus, autumn has always felt more to me like a season of beginnings.

Autumn is hand-down my favorite season. My birthday is squarely in autumn. I associate fall with one of the few things I truly enjoyed about high school: marching band. I think mostly it’s the weather, though. Summers here are truly oppressive, and I joke with people that I must have a touch of vampire in my blood (”The sun! It burns!”). Winter doesn’t bother me nearly as badly, but it’s a bit static. Fall, though, I really get excited about. I love stepping out into the crisp, crystal clear, cool mornings of late fall. They just make me feel energized. Most of all, though, I enjoy the cloudy, windy, almost-stormy days. Storms tend to pop up and spend themselves quickly during the summer. In the autumn, it can sometimes be just on the edge of storming for hours. Dark clouds are moving overhead fast enough to show their direction. The cool wind is just the right temperature (apparently much too cool for most people).

Yep. This is definitely my time of year coming up. I’m with you on this one, Geof.

I feel the exact same way. Glad to know someone else gets that.

Fall hits and I’m in the mood to be in love - I want to do all of the typical fall things - but with someone special.

‘Course it’ my favorite season anyways….
