Wrapping Up
Well, when the calendar turns to April, I will hit a frenzied pace. On the last day of the month, I will take my last final exam at UAH as an undergraduate. God willing, that’s it. [I'm in good shape with classes, but I consider anything possible at this point. Keeps me motivated.]
One month to go–what a weird feeling. The semester has flown by–it feels like I’m only five or six weeks into it, instead of ten. So much that I took for granted at the beginning of this semester [that it would be easy, that I'd run for SGA President, that senior design was going to be cake] is proving to be so much horsehockey [it's not easy, I didn't run, and senior design is challenging]. In a month, my academic pursuit in engineering will be complete.
Neato. Now I can study stuff that I enjoy.
You know, back in high school, I enjoyed studying physics. Learning how stuff worked was cool. But then, that was it. After you learn how it works, what’s the point? Okay, so I didn’t learn how all of it worked. But really … I like designing systems, but not of a mechanical or electrical sort.
When it comes down to it, this is just a part of my life that I want to wrap up and complete. Once I’ve finished it, my parents and I [mostly my parents] will have spent around $10,000 on my engineering education. [God bless scholarships.] I’ll spend about that much on the first graduate degree, and probably two or three times that on the second one. Both, I think, are going to be eminently more enjoyable than the first.
You know, I think the last time I enjoyed engineering school was my third semester. That’s a scary thought, considering that was the fall of 1998.
I’m ready to just … be done. In a lot of ways, this dalliance with engineering was a mistake–fooling myself into thinking that I had the right ideas for my life. Oops. Shoulda listened. Shoulda transferred. Shoulda … but not what I did. I can live with the regret of the “shouldas”, or I can go on with my life. I think at this point that it’s prudent to do the latter.
Hey, it was fun while it lasted … sorta. At least it’s paid decently.
