Geof’s New Music: 9-15 Mar 2008
This week’s new music features a new record from Five O’Clock People, who most folks had given up for dead around the turn of the century. And, to be fair, I think even they had. But they’ve reunited, and it feels so good!
Five O’Clock People’s Temper Temper.
Led Zeppelin’s Coda.- 2 Mar 1992 [New Haven, CT, USA] concert bootleg of Uncle Tupelo.
1992-03-02: Toad's Place, New Haven, CT, USA - 11 Feb 2005 [Richmond, VA, USA] concert bootleg of Caedmon’s Call.
2005-02-11: Second Baptist Church, Richmond, VA, USA. - 14 Dec 2006 [Nashville, TN, USA] concert bootleg of Over the Rhine.
2006-12-14: 3rd and Lindsley, Nashville, TN, USA (disc 1) and
2006-12-14: 3rd and Lindsley, Nashville, TN, USA (disc 2).
16 Mar 2007 [Nashville, TN, USA] concert bootleg of Sandra McCracken.
2007-03-16: The Rutledge, Nashville, TN, USA (FLAC - AUD).
18 Feb 2008 [Chicago, IL, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco.

Led Zeppelin’s In Through the Out Door. One more reason to hate disco: influencing Zep to use synthesizers. Two-and-a-half stars.- 22 Oct 1991 [Oxford, MS, USA] concert bootleg of Uncle Tupelo. Better recordings of UT exist. It’s not terrible, but it’s not good. Two stars.
5 Jun 2006 [Charlotte, NC, USA] concert bootleg of HEM. This is a poor recording of a sluggish concert. I’m almost to the point that I think I prefer to just listen to their studio records. Man, do they ever need a percussionist and some songs above 65 bpm. Two-and-a-half stars.
4 Feb 2008 [Birmingham, AL, USA] concert bootleg of Over the Rhine. I’m generally very happy with how this came out, given the equipment I was using. [I wouldn't order my condenser mics until later that week.] I didn’t mention this, but I cheated in using my omnis: I put the whole rig inside of my padded case, then opened the case halfway and faced the padding towards the stage. Cut down on the reflections. It still gets overwhelmed at the bass and drum solos that Jake and Mickey do during “Who’m I Kiddin’ But Me?”, but it sounds pretty solid. Three-and-a-half stars.
16 Feb 2008 [Chicago, IL, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco. This recording of the second night is far better. The peak is in the middle of the show, from “Jesus, Etc.” to “The Late Greats”. Three-and-a-half stars.
24 Feb 2008 [Langhorne, PA, USA] concert bootleg of Caedmon’s Call. I’m very, very critical of this recording. There’s not enough bass in there for my taste, and it sounds a tad hollow. I’m not sure that my microphone placement was the best, but then part of that is also a function of the room: a basketball gym with bleachers on one side. Hunter keeps telling me I should be happier with it, but … I just don’t know. Three stars. Barely.
24 Feb 2008 [Langhorne, PA, USA] concert bootleg of Andrew Osenga. Same mics, same setup, but this came out so much better. I can’t really explain it. Four stars.

Geof’s New Music: 16-22 Mar 2008…
No real intro this week. I’m spending time and energy this week getting a new hard drive on my new mini and getting all the music off of my old mini. Such are the joys of having a 200GB+ music collection…
