Geof’s New Music: 6-12 May 2007
I freely admit that this week’s selections are going to get drowned out by the awesomeness of the first, but … that was true for last week’s stuff, too.
Jeremy Casella’s Recovery, which I have already babbled about.
Alli Rogers’s The Day of Small Things.- 9 May 1997 [San Francisco, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco. I wasn’t intending to listen to this a full decade after it was first recorded, but … fortuitous.
- 8 Apr 2006 [Chicago, IL, USA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy.
- 18 Apr 2007 [Melbourne, Australia] concert bootleg of Wilco.
- 26 Apr 2007 [Lynchburg, VA, USA] concert bootleg of Sandra McCracken.
- 26 Apr 2007 [Lynchburg, VA, USA] concert bootleg of Derek Webb.
Last week was dominated by my acquisition of the new Casella mid-week, but still … the rankings must go on.
Bruce Springsteen’s Greatest Hits. Admittedly, it’s goofy to talk about a greatest hits album in relation to the rest of an artist’s work. I’m a completionist, so I’m not exactly the market type for most such albums, but they do have their uses—mainly as a way of finding what era of a long-spanned artist that you like. [Conversely, the concept of a Jennifer Knapp GHA always amused me, because she had less than a handful of albums in the first place before her muse gave her up.] Ignoring that GHAs are usually just brazen moneygrabs for record labels—not that I’m presently bitter about a record label trying to do that to my friends right now or anything—they have some value. As does this, which gets three stars. [Sorry, I'm cranky this morning.]- Alli Rogers’s At Sea. It’s a solid recording and is representative of Alli’s work right now. She’s out touring with Derek Webb, and so I’ve gotten to know her a little bit as a result. Three stars. [I really like "Tanzania".]
- 17 Aug 1996 [Hartford, CT, USA] concert bootleg of Son Volt. Listening to old Son Volt makes me lament that they fell apart after Trace. Three-and-a-half stars.
- 19 Feb 1997 [Toronto, ON, CA] concert bootleg of Wilco. Very meh. Two-and-a-half stars.
- 16 Jun 2006 [Manchester, TN, USA] concert bootleg of Ben Folds. Sadly, a very poor recording. Two stars.
- 6 Apr 2007 [Chicago, IL, USA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy. A solid but unspectacular recording. Three stars.
- 19 Apr 2007 [Melbourne, Australia] concert bootleg of Wilco. Another solid-but-unspectacular recording. Three stars.

“Jennifer Knapp … before her muse gave her up”
May 9th, 2007 at 07:31What does this mean? I am fan but only slightly and I have wondered why she is no longer making music.
Brad: She’s regularly said that she’s just hit a dry spell with her writing.

Okay, so it took me all the way until now to get this done, but hey … I brought in a new roommate on Sunday and then promptly went to Texas for the next three days.
Alli Rogers’s Always Eden.
