Geof’s New Music: 17-30 Dec 2006
There was no new music last week. Last week … sucked. We had a roof leak at the office that opened up right over the IT server room. You can just imagine. As a result, it was a fractious mess all last week—we made it through, of course—but I was too wiped to mess with music, so I didn’t. Here’s the new queue of stuff, a bunch of stuff that’s going to finish out my year right:
Over the Rhine’s Snow Angels. Man oh man, is this ever good.
Snow Patrol’s Eyes Open.
Five for Fighting’s Two Lights.
M. Ward’s Transfiguration of Vincent.
The Fray’s How to Save a Life.
Jeff Buckley’s Grace.
As you can see, that’s a lot of new music! I expect to chew on this stuff this week and next; I’ll be spending a large part of next week out-of-town, obviously, so these will be my last new adds for 2006. [That'll make doing a best-of year-end list easier to do if I'm not adding new stuff at the last minute, eh?]
Here’s what I had two weeks ago:
- 15 Mar 2006 [Meridian, MS, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco. Of the two shows, this had better energy from the crowd and the band. Three-and-a-half stars.
- 10 Oct 2006 [Oxford, MS, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco. This had less energy but more new songs.
- 6 Nov 1992 [Cincinnati, OH, USA] concert bootleg of Over the Rhine. One of two old-school OtR boots that Jeff gave me for my birthday, and one that I’ve really appreciated. I’ll likely never get to hear Ric-Brian-Karin-Linford-era OtR, but this gives me an appreciation for it. Also, they’re playing the home crowd, and that’s always fun. Three-and-a-half stars.
I couldn’t help but gape a bit that _Grace_ is new to you… and I’m jealous.
I’ll never forget how I felt the first time I heard his version of “Hallelujah,” and it still ‘gets me right here’ but there’s nothing like that first time.

I’m back in Alabama. Good trip, all told; given that it all involves my family, I’ll not write about much of it at all. [That’s not an I’m-afraid-to-write-about-my-family thing, that’s an I-know-you-don’t-care thin…

I’m a full week late with this, but here we are. I spent most of last week listening to my best albumts of 2006, as my Last.FM charts would indicate. Good times. The top six are all in my car right now, which has made for some great driving th…

This week begins a month full of M. Ward. After falling in love with his music earlier this winter, I took some Christmas money and bought the rest of his discography after Christmas. It arrived earlier this week, and I’m going to spread it out…
