Geof’s New Music: 23-29 Jul 2006
This week is all bootlegs. I’m trying to work off my backlog, which is … significant.
- 1 May 1994 [St. Louis, MO, USA] concert bootleg of Uncle Tupelo.
- 26 Jun 1996 [San Francisco, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Golden Smog.
- 19 May 1998 [West Hollywood, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith.
- 10 Feb 2000 [Milligan, TN, USA] concert bootleg of Andrew Peterson.
- 10 Feb 2000 [Milligan, TN, USA] concert bootleg of Derek Webb.
- 28 Apr 2000 [New Orleans, LA, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco.
- 2 Feb 2006 [Seattle, WA, USA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy.
- 30 May 2006 [Chicago, IL, USA] concert bootleg of Over the Rhine.
- 6 Jul 2006 [Nashville, TN, USA] concert bootleg of Katy Bowser.
Here’s last week, which I posted and then failed to review. Duh. I’m on crack. Carry on:
- Sandra McCracken’s Gravity | Love. Three stars. I’m … vaguely disappointed, for reasons I’m not sure of. Well, I think that they involve the production choices. Maybe it’ll grow on me—the writing is very good, and Sandra’s performances are good as they always are.
- Mute Math’s eponymous release. I think I could really like this. Three-and-a-half stars.
- Sufjan Stevens’s The Avalanche: Outtakes & Extras from Illinois Album. Yeah, these were leftover for a reason—they’re good, and it’s, oh, the quality of Michigan in many ways, but it’s no Illinois. Three stars. [Don't get me started on the Sufjan haters.]
- 13 Feb 1997 [Davis, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Beck. Two-and-a-half stars.
- 21 Apr 2000 [Knoxville, TN, USA] concert bootleg of Andrew Peterson. Three stars. If it hadn’t faded in the last half of the show, it’d be higher. Sounds really good, though!
- 24 Jun 2000 [Leo, IN, USA] concert bootleg of Andrew Peterson. Three-and-a-half stars. This is a good little AP bootleg. If you had to pick one out of this era, this is it.
- 24 Jun 2000 [Leo, IN, USA] concert bootleg of Eric Peters. Three stars. Eric’s voice sounds really good here. Man, I like this guy.
- 23 Oct 2001 [Lynchburg, VA, USA] concert bootleg of Randall Goodgame. Three stars. Man, that Randall Goodgame: he will have me laughing one minute and all dusty the next.
- 2 Feb 2002 [Winston-Salem, NC, USA] concert bootleg of Derek Webb. Richard’s clear that the sound quality was going to be pretty iffy. It is. One-and-a-half stars.
- 2 Feb 2002 [Winston-Salem, NC, USA] concert bootleg of Andrew Peterson. Same song, second verse, same rating.
- 5 May 2006 [Columbia, SC, USA] concert bootleg of Derek Webb. This is a great-sounding recording. Four stars, and the first five-star rating I’ve given to something right out of the box in some time [for the "My Enemies Are Men Like Me" rendition, but man ... I love that song]. [And if you don't, well, that's fine.]
