Geof’s New Music: 18-24 Jun 2006
This week is full of concert bootlegs. The common thread is the presence of Jeff Tweedy.
- 29 Nov 1990 [Columbia, MO, USA] bootleg of Uncle Tupelo.
26 Jun 1996 [San Francisco, CA, USA] bootleg of Golden Smog.- 31 Jan 1997 [St. Louis, MO, USA] bootleg of Wilco.
- 10 May 1997 [San Francisco, CA, USA] bootleg of Wilco.
- 4 Nov 1997 [Columbia, MO, USA] bootleg of Wilco.
- 10 Mar 2001 [Hollywood, CA, USA] bootleg of Jeff Tweedy.
Last week was all bootlegs, save one new one:
- Matthew Perryman Jones’s Throwing Punches in the Dark. Three stars; “Refuge” is great. I think that, like Over the Rhine albums, this is best listened to at high volumes.
- 22 Aug 1988 [Columbia, MO, USA] concert bootleg of Uncle Tupelo. Three stars; it’s the second half of the show that’s consistently good to my ears, and I really liked the “Life Worth Livin’ ” cut.
- 13 May 1999 [Westwood, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco. Three stars; “Box Full of Letters” is pretty good here.
- 3 Mar 2001 [Vancouver, BC, CA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy. Three stars; some Tweedy shows are just too quiet and monotonous for my tastes. The second half of the show gets good as he builds a rapport [and gets some energy] from the audience; they’re chatty early on, which always draws Jeff’s ire.
- 10 Jun 2005 [Berlin, GER] concert bootleg of Queens of the Stone Age. Three stars; “Leg of Lamb”, “No One Knows”, and “Go With the Flow” are really great in this acoustic set.
- 4 Apr 2003 [Böblingen, GER] concert bootleg of Coldplay. Three stars; I liked the cut of “The Scientist” most.
