Geof’s New Music: 11-17 Jun 2006
Okay, so I took a week off when I was re-rating songs. Remember, there’s going to be a disconnect between my old ratings and my new ones because of the change in my average rating. Call it … re-centering, like they do for the SAT.
Here’s the new stuff I have, all bootlegs:
- Matthew Perryman Jones’s Throwing Punches in the Dark.
- 22 Aug 1988 [Columbia, MO, USA] concert bootleg of Uncle Tupelo.
- 13 May 1999 [Westwood, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco.
- 3 Mar 2001 [Vancouver, BC, CA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy.
- 10 Jun 2005 [Berlin, GER] concert bootleg of Queens of the Stone Age.
- 4 Apr 2003 [Böblingen, GER] concert bootleg of Coldplay.
Here’s the old stuff that percolated a while:
- The Cardigans on KCRW, 18 Jun 1996. Three stars; radio interviews-with-songs are always kinda awkward, and The Cardigans definitely seemed a bit bewildered.
- The Cardigans in Malmö, Sweden, 19 Mar 2006. Two-and-a-half stars, mainly because the recording is poor.
- R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People. Three stars. [See? Told you the scores would be down. I really liked this!
] - R.E.M.’s Monster. Three stars.
- Green. Three stars.
- Ryan Adams’s 29. Two stars, and it barely deserves that. Now, I’m a fan of Over the Rhine and HEM, so I like quietly powerful music. [Shut it, Adriene.] But this was just … yawn-inducing.
- Ryan Adams’s Rock N Roll. Three stars.
- Andrew Osenga’s The Morning. Four stars … Andy, this album rocks.
- Andrew Osenga’s Photographs. Three-and-a-half stars. The re-mastering definitely makes a difference to my ears, and I love the two new tracks.
