Geof’s New Music: 7-20 May 2006
Because I’ve got four new albums that I really want to listen to that I didn’t get to touch until yesterday, I’m declaring this the GNM entry for this week and next:
- Bruce Springsteen’s We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions
- Death Cab for Cutie’s Plans
- Ryan Adams’s Love Is Hell
- Whiskeytown’s Pneumonia
I think that Scott will approve [even if the Boss did hack him off with all the politics at JazzFest].
Last week was chock full of the late, great Elliott Smith:
- Roman Candle. This is a really rough album—it’s really a demo—but it still gets three-and-a-half stars from me.
- XO. I love it: four-and-a-half stars, and almost five.
- Figure 8. Almost as good as XO, but not quite for me. Still gets four-and-a-half stars.
- 17 Sep 1994 [Portland, OR, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith. Four stars: the highlights for me were “Big Decision” and “No Confidence Man”.
- 1 Dec 1994 [Scottsdale, AZ, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith. Four stars: solid, but nothing great nor fair.
- 12 Apr 1997 [Princeton, NJ, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith. Four-and-a-half stars: the second half of the show shines.
- 17 Apr 1998 [Washington, DC, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith. Four stars: “Rose Parade”, “St. Ides Heaven”, and “Thirteen” are all great.
- 16 Sep 1998 [Seattle, WA, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith. Three-and-a-half stars: only “Bottle UP and Explode” is great.
- 22 Mar 2003 [Solana Beach, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith. Three-and-a-half stars: only “Say Yes”, which ends the set, is great in my mind.

i do approve. and the boss only hacked me off because he thought spouting off about how bad things were was going to cheer people up. if you’re not here to cheer us up, GTFO!

Wow, I’m incredibly tardy in getting this out, aren’t I? I’ve kept finding reasons to put it off. Ah me. Part of it is that I have been … unenthusiastic about the choices I made for this week.

One of the reasons that I started Musiclogging is because music’s really important to me, and logging the music as I listen to it forces me to have some discipline about it. I’m seeking even more such discipline in the new year, but weR…
