Geof’s New Music: 2-8 Apr 2006
The new music all comes from the show I attended on Saturday:
- Andy Gullahorn’s Room to Breathe.
- Eric Peters’s Scarce.
- Jill Phillips’s Kingdom Come.
- Jill Phillips’s Writing on the Wall.
Mind you, I wasn’t really planning on buying Kingdom Come—I’m not one for hymns albums, generally—but Andy handed it to me after I’d bought each of their CDs, and I wasn’t going to say no to him.
I love these people.
Last week, I was still in bootleg mode. [I'm actually worse now that I have more hard drive space available. I need an intervention.]
- 16 Oct 1970 [Philadelphia, PA, USA] concert bootleg of Derek and the Dominoes. Four-and-a-half stars. I’m shocked that it’s this good!
- 20 Mar 1991 [St. Louis, MO, USA] concert bootleg of Uncle Tupelo. Four stars. The middle of this show is where it gets good: “Train”, “Live Worth Livin’”, “Screen Door”, and “John Hardy”.
- 30 Jul 1993 [St. Louis, MO, USA] concert bootleg of Coffee Creek. Three-and-a-half stars. “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” and “Truck Drivin’ Man” are the only real go-getters for me.
- 26 Mar 1996 [Hollywood, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Son Volt. Four-and-a-half stars. I don’t know enough newer Son Volt to really appreciate the bootlegs I have, so I’m listening to the older stuff, and man … this set kicked it. “Route”, “Loose String”, “Anodyne”, “Windfall”, “Slate”, “Cemetary Saviour”, “Drown”, and “Too Early” all just rocked it. There’s not a bad track on here.
- 28 Jun 1998 [San Jose, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco. Three-and-a-half stars … barely. A short set [I think they might have been an opener], and the sound at the venue clearly sucked.
- 13 Feb 2004 [Orlando, FL, USA] concert bootleg of Modest Mouse. Four-and-a-half stars. I know I’ve said that these guys are hit-or-miss, but this is a hit. “Paper Thin Walls”, “Third Planet”, “Satin in a Coffin”, “Good Times Are Killing Me”, and “Float On” all just rock. [I always want to make that "Satan in a Coffin". Heh.]
- 5 Nov 2005 [Madison, WI, USA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy. Oh wow. Four-and-a-half stars, and I could probably give it a five without feeling guilty. It starts a bit slow, but by the time he hits “The Ruling Class”, he’s found his stride. In the encore, he brings his son Spencer out to kit drums, and the little guy rocks it out. The crowd just exploded, as well they should have.

Geof’s New Music: 9-15 Apr 2006
I have but one new album this week: Andrew Peterson’s Appendix A: Bootlegs & B-Sides, which is only available for a limited time at his Web store. You best get it soon if, like me and Rick, you love AP. My buddy Ron gets co-producer credit…
April 11th, 2006 at 10:18I picked up that Jeff Tweedy bootleg the other night and am listening to it today. You’re right, it’s phenomenal. Thanks for the link.
