I've already installed it on my customized install with no problems. Insert two lines immediately after and before the opening and closing ul tags, respectively; and create a four-line functions.php. Other than uploading and activating, that's all that I had to do. And the readme guided me through all of that.

Oh, one thing about the readme: view it in Word or something equivalent. It's damn near unreadable in Notepad. (Personally, I think that's stupid; but <em>c'est la vie</em>.)

Also Geof, I renamed my theme folder to bluehorizon and added the Kubrick theme from the 2.0.2 package under the default folder. Just for you. ;)

Well, I plan on offering it to the community I host. I'd say that 80% of those folks don't know HTML from CSS.

I kinda agree. Personally I don't have much use for these new fangled widget things... Still, remember that they were originally designed for use on WP.com, not self-hosted WP installs.

I imagine that these guys have a certain amount of time budgeted to each program they're involved in (such as x hours for WP.com work, x hours for WP work), just to make sure neither gets neglected too much. If that were the case, it's quite possible that widgets were a cool feature done in their WP.com time, and not actually at the expense of the time that could have been devoted to fixing / improving WP itself. Since they then wrapped up the widget code in a plugin and released it for WP too, everybody wins...
