July 2006: Take a Vacation

A RESOLUTION to Take a Vacation in July 2006

WHEREAS I have worked for Teledyne Brown Engineering since August of 1999, and

WHEREAS I have, in six-plus years at TBE, only had two weeks where I charged no time to a contract, and

WHEREAS both of those weeks were spent on mission trips for youth, so they really weren’t vacations in the traditional sense, and

WHEREAS I’m unlikely to take a full week off of work unless I tell everyone that I’m going to do it and get the plan in way in advance, and

WHEREAS I really have no idea where I’d go on a vacation at present,

THEREFORE Let it be hereby resolved by the Board of Directors of GFMorris.com that:

  1. I’m going to take a vacation in July 2006, come hell or high water.
  2. A plan for taking said vacation—what to do, where to go, how to get there—will be devised by 30 Apr 30062006.

THEREFORE Let it be further resolved that a report on the success of this effort be made no later than 2 Aug 2006.

RESOLVED on this, the eighth day of January, 2006, by the Board of Directors of GFMorris.com, Geof F. Morris, Resident Workaholic, presiding.

If one of the earlier resolutions proves to be unworkable by its scheduled date, you could swap it out with this one, as this is probably the easiest resolution to accomplish that you’ve posted thus far.

Yes! Take a vacation. You know that when we were in the Air Force, we took only one real vacation. That is when we went to Yellowstone. I hope you and Doug enjoyed it as much as Mom and I did.

Steve: Hardly! See Dad’s comment—it’s just not like us to take vacations.

Dad: Oh yes. I remember that trip well. I’ve actually been thinking about going out West somewhere. If I can find a national park with a cabin for rent … I think that’ll do. Ideally, I’d like two weeks so I could drive out and back, but that’s not happening.

where ever you go, do not take a computer…the cell phone, only use for emergencies. that’s what i’d lovce to do. :)

  5. Geof F. Morris:

Exactly, Scott. If I took along a computer, it would only serve to be a place for me to type up stuff to post here while I was gone, and a place to dump photos off of my camera at night.

I hear the West calling my name…

I think you can get it planned in just a bit over a thousand years :)

Taking vacation has to happen through deliberate action like this. I hear people at work all the time debating about when there will be a good time to go on vacation… but if you’re really an integral part of your team at work, there really is never a good time.

Going West sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve made it out to Colorado Springs and Salt Lake City for TBP stuff and have just really loved what little of it I was able to see. A trips to Boulder, San Antonio, and Hawaii are on the radar for this year right now (first two for TBP, the last because Jessica’s going out there) I guess that explains why I never have any vacation time left when the holidays roll around :)

This should be a lot of fun for you! Make sure to keep us posted on where you decide to go.

    Ooooooooooooooops. Thanks, Rick.

Yep! My bosses just tell me to plan to take off time and go. Normally, I would avoid the summertime so my co-workers with kids could do their normal summer thing, but … screw it.

Last night, I spent time looking at National Parks out west. I have to price it out, but I’m looking at flying in to Vegas or SLC and driving to southern Utah and catching the four NP’s down that way. Just me, a 4WD rental car, my digicam, and a computer to dump stuff onto at night.

As I’m headed to Portland in May—I wasn’t kidding when I said I’d sell body parts to go see Over the Rhine and Hem together!—I picked up a travel guide to Portland today. I fly out on Saturday the 6th and back home on Tu…

    Noooooooooooooo! And YESSSSSSSSSSSS!
That describes my emotions about five minutes ago when I read the latest email missive from Karin and Linford: Hem will be joining them on the Mid-South dates after all. I’m still going to Portland, though; …

    Well, Steve, …

    Vacated…

Well, let me put it this way: I hadn’t taken a full week off from work since I started working full-time. Yes, that’s four-and-a-half years without much in the way of a break. [I tend to take my vacation time in one-to-three-day spurts.]
