µTorrent v. Azareus

Chris Pirillo argues that µTorrent is going to eat Azareus’s lunch. All I know is that, from time to time, it’d be handy for me to have a BT client around—if for no other reason than to help Stephen run seeds for IFComp.

I invite comments: I’m really clueless on this subject, but I suspect I have some readers with clues.

One advantage Azareus has over microTorrent is that it’s open source. Sure, the microTorrent people say that it’ll stay free, but greed could set in and they could start charging for it.

Also, Azareus is in Java, so in theory it should run on anything — I note that they’ve got howtos for Windows, Linux, and OS X. microTorrent only runs on Windows.

I use Azareus on OS X and have never had a problem with it.

  2. Stephen:

I’ve not used microTorrent. Some of the things listed in the linked article about uTorrent are features of Azureus: Azureus automatically downloads its updates via bittorrent and replaces the .jar files for you. It’s certainly bigger than microTorrent, but I don’t find it slow, and it supports trackerless downloading. Until microTorrent supports that, I won’t be switching.

I have also heard good things about bitcomet, i downloaded the client and I find it mych more user friendly than azureus I.E. you can search the web within the client as opposed to searching through google for sites with azurues.

Either way I run peerguardian 2 just like stephen when i turn on my torrent clients. the extra protection can be good for you.
