Exclaves
As I read that Alaska is an exclave, I was all, “What the hell’s an exclave?” So I read on, finding that there are some really interesting exclaves in the United States:
- Of course, there’s da UP. [Hi, John!] I’ve never wintered there, but I’m insane enough that I think I might like to try it once. [Stop laughing, John!]
- Alaska is, but Hawai’i isn’t, because Hawai’i is an island chain and is not contiguous with another country. [I was also geeked to learn that Alaska doesn't have counties. I discovered all this when I was looking at the counties of Arizona after posting about the explosive growth of Maricopa, AZ early this morning.
- Point Roberts, Washington and The Northwest Angle in Minnesota are exclaves of the US due to the interesting vagaries of the US border with Canada.
- Virginia's piece of the Delmarva Peninsula, which has long confounded me.
- The Madrid Bend, where Kentucky is encapsulated by the Muddy Mississippi and you have to enter from Tennessee.
Yes, I get lost in Wikipedia easy. I come by this honestly; after all, Dad used to read the encyclopedia as a child. [So did I, but this cross-references so much more awesomely.]
