Musical Baton
Finally, I was passed a musical baton by Lara. [I've secretly wanted to participate for a good week.
]
Amount of music on your computer?
2069 songs, 11.39 GB, six days or so. I have more music than this, but my migration of my music collection to my office box is slow. Since I’m a good Weblogger and an iTunes fan, most every link below is to the iTunes Music Store, in case you’re wanting to pay to listen to the songs in my head.
Currently listening to?
“Hell Is Chrome” — Wilco, a ghost is born.
Five songs that mean a lot to you?
“Lover Pt. 2″ by Derek Webb on i see things upside down.
“Can’t Lose You” from Caedmon’s Call’s Long Line of Leavers. I’m right at where Derek was when he wrote this song, as my brother just got married …
“We Are The Beggars at the Foot of God’s Door” by The Normals on Coming to Life. Forefront Records executives should be ashamed that they killed The Normals.
“Poughkeepsie” by Over The Rhine on Good Dog, Bad Dog.
“Late Greats” by Wilco on a ghost is born … because that describes every song on this list. “Can’t hear ‘em on the radio / Can’t hear ‘em everywhere you go”.
Top five albums?
Caedmon’s Call’s Long Line of Leavers: I’m probably considered a heretic for this, but it’s my favorite album they’ve ever put out. 40 Acres and Share the Well are 2A and 2B.
Derek Webb’s i see things upside down: A phenomenal album by a good friend. Well, except for “T-Shirts”, which had no business being on that record. If you buy it on iTunes or rip it to MP3, just delete “T-Shirts”. You can thank me later.
Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: YHF and agib made me love this band.
Hem’s Eveningland: The writing on Rabbit Songs may have been a touch better, but the production on Eveningland is vastly superior and makes for a better listening experience.
Over The Rhine’s Good Dog, Bad Dog: I can never get enough of this album. I’m arguing with myself over the pick—I want to go for Drunkard’s Prayer or Ohio—but honestly, GDBD is what I always come back to listen to one more time. “What a beautiful piece of heartache…”
Last album bought?
It’s pretty hard for me to think of which album I bought last; certainly, the one with the most impact on me was Drunkard’s Prayer.
Recent discoveries?
I think my discovery of Hem is the biggest one I’ve had of 2005. It’s right up there with falling in love with Over The Rhine in 2004, which probably surprises some people who’ve heard me babble about OTR.
Passing on the musical baton.

Dangit, I’ve been tagged by Spencer for one of these foofy meme things. This time, the theme is books, which is something I don’t have a handle on nearly as well as I might, say, my music collection. [No worries: once I finish moving int…
June 5th, 2005 at 12:24Hey Geof! Remember me? It’s the kid from Charlottesville, VA who went to the Atlanta Caedmon’s show a couple of years ago.
RMFO-Blogs is cool, dude. I finally posted my version of the Musical Baton: here.

June 8th, 2005 at 00:23[...] |Out of the Grey – Wishes]So I got passed this musical baton thing last week sometime, but I’ve neglected to carry on the torch until just now. So let’s see what I come up with.Amount of music on your computer? There are 2,741 songs on my computer right now. I don’t like them all, but I’m too lazy to delete the ones that never get listened to. Currently listening to?Well, when I started the entry it was Out of the Grey, then Dar Williams, and now Sarah McLachlan. I’m working slowly apparently.Five Seven songs that mean a lot to you?(For awhile I had linked directly to MP3s of these songs, but I’m removing the links to save on bandwidth. If you’re interested in hearing one or more of them, send me an email.)Damien Rice, Blower’s Daughter – I first heard Damien play live with his band at a show in Hollywood in the fall of 2003. It completely blew me away. This song is so passionate, so powerful, so very raw… I could listen over and over and over again and never tire of it, particularly the bit at the end where the female vocalist joins in. Such good music.Jeff Buckley, Hallelujah – I suppose this song has been covered by many people and while I really enjoy the song by whomever sings it, I think that Buckley does the best job at singing it with the feeling it was meant to originally have. Gorgeous.Ben Folds, The Luckiest – If you can somehow listen to this song, and not fall in love with it, you are a much stronger person than I am.Over the Rhine, Within Without – This is from the age when Over the Rhine was a rock band, and while I love their sound now, it’s obvious from my domain that this song holds personal significance to me. Do you know they call it arson? Setting fires without permission in my heart (any maybe elsewhere, too)?U2, Running to Stand Still – This has always been my favorite U2 song, although I’m not sure why. I think again it comes down to the passion.David Wilcox, Common as the Rain – This is a reminder that all the heartache I’ve caused and endured is not only valid and a part of life, but also a common experience shared by everyone that enters into community. No one ever plans to hurt or be hurt, and yet it happens, over and over again. I could have picked any number of David Wilcox songs, since really they all speak to me of the beauty and tragedy of the human condition.Fernando Ortega – Give Me Jesus – In the morning when I rise, give me Jesus…. you can have all this world, but give me Jesus.Top five albums? These are the albums that can make me feel like I’m at home, even when I’m thousands of miles from anything else familiar:Sarah McLachlan – SolaceR.E.M. – Automatic for the PeopleU2 – The Joshua TreeDavid Wilcox – How did you find me here?Indigo Girls – Swamp OpheliaOver the Rhine – Patience(Oops…had to pick 6).Last album bought?I bought 3 albums over the weekend:The Magnetic Fields – 69 Love Songs Box SetHem – Rabbit SongsRay LaMontagne – TroubleRecent discoveries? The most significant recent discovery for me has definitely been Hem, which was recommended to me by many, many people before I finally started listening. I’m not sure why I resisted so long.Passing on the musical baton.Okay, I pass this baton onto the following people:RockoSonny – DONE!PattiJosiahSteveSeth – DONE!Geof – DONE!(and anyone else who wishes to respond/post your own…)Won’t you reach out and pull me in?(You can also view this post at withinwithout.org.) linkReply [...]
