File This Under “Geof Is Insane”

You know, I could get a second baccalaureate degree from UAH in Computer Science in two, maybe three years …

It would probably be as useful (or more) than a management masters. (imo)

Well, my boss and I have talked over my EM degree, and we both agree that my pursuit of it is the best thing I could do for my career right now.

This is something I could do after that, though …

  3. Rick King:

    True… true.

I also have a bias since I’m basically a full time programmer working with a bunch of guys who are EEs who have learned to program on the job.

  4. Geof F. Morris:

Heh … go and suggest that they do the same thing. ;)

My reply would be, if you’re thinking about a second masters, just go do the masters degree.

But, I also agree with your boss. As your career progresses, you will be more likely to manage persons and other resources than you will be to write code.

I don’t have the background for an MS in it, and the way that the second bachelor’s degree works is that you don’t have to take any of the GER [provided that you satisfied it all with the first degree], and that you only have to take the major and any required minor coursework. That puts me to only doing the CS core of classes, plus one math course to satisfy the mathematics minor I never got … and actually, the CS math minor varies from the engineering math minor, because my BSE required me to take DiffEQ, where that’s one of the three elective courses that satisfy the CS math minor requirement.

This would be for purely personal reasons, really; I wouldn’t be taking it to advance my TBE career, althought it might advance any careers past that point. It seems to me that a rigorous academic foundation would serve me well in such endeavors, better than just hobbyist stuff.

Heh… the more likely thing is that I need to learn it just well enough so that I can start teaching within my group. I’m already seen as the OOP expert in my group since I was actually exposed to it in school. I sure wish that I’d known I would be programming for a career back then. I always approached programming as something that I could do, but that I didn’t care to do to any great extent. That mindset has probably set me back at least a year or two in my overall development as a software developer.

But I’ve gotten way off topic there….

Enjoy your future time in school…. as for me and my house, we are finished for now.

Well, we all see things early in our careers that would have served us well out in the workforce. For me, I wish I’d gone through with my switch to Industrial … although the pay at TBE for an AE degree is much better. [Silly, but true.]

This learning-so-as-to-teach seems to be a consistent theme with you, Mr. King. I think it serves you well.

  9. Rick:

Yeah… if only I was more comfortable in front of a group and could have accepted the pay scale of a teacher.

I’ll just have to do my share from where I am. And eventually get more comfortable with it.

Well, teachers exist in many walks of life…

    Goin’ to Straighten ‘em Out

I’ve got a meeting this afternoon to work on a training program with UAH’s SGA … again. Maybe this time, we’ll actually get this off the ground.
While I’m there, I’ll probably swing by the Registrar’s office…
