Geof:

I can probably help you out with that at some point. I've played around a bit with Subversion on a test box here at the house.

Most of the work involved in getting a "standard" installation running comes from installing Apache 2 on the box you want to use as a server. Alternatively, you can install a standalone "svnserve" process. Each has advantages/disadvantages.

If you want to research, check out:
http://svnbook.red-bean.com/
(look at the docs for version 1.1. It's the current one.) Otherwise, catch me at the gathering tomorrow night, and we can talk more about it.

I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about getting this set up to help me maintain slidingconstant.net.

http://subversion.tigris.org/

I don't do server administration, so I'm afraid I'm not very useful in terms of how to set it up. The installers for OS X worked well for me. :)

You need version control my friend - each WP install as a SVN checkout would make things a lot easier, plus you get revision history.

Well... maybe tonight I'll get canspice.org upgraded now that 1.5.1 is out.

No, it's not an irrational fear of x.0 releases, I swear. :)
