Probably nothing… Ashcroft was just one of the more right-leaning folks in the Bush administration, while Powell was one of the more centrist folks. (Remember, for a long time there was some debate about which party Powell belonged to.) It just seems fitting, unfortunately…
Geof: I don’t lay all the blame at his feet, no. But he was chosen to make the case precisely because of his credibility and his integrity. The decision to “mouth the party line” in this case means I will not trust his credibility and integrity in the future.
Of course, now the news wires are speculating that Condi Rice will be nominated as his replacement, so I don’t have to worry about credibility and integrity in that post regardless.

Dad:
Colin Powell has been very clear to those who listened. He took the post of Secretary of State with the understanding that he did not wish to serve eight years.
Personnaly, I would like to have him as Sec. of State for life, but he has served the Nation well and honorably as our top military officer and as our top diplomat. I salute him.

Leave a response:
It's all just a stream of consciousness for me, folks.
I was afraid we’d pay some penalty for Ashcroft’s resignation… Alas, we now know what it is…
November 15th, 2004 at 16:10I guess I’m out of the loop, but what does Ashcroft’s resignation have to do with Powell’s?
November 15th, 2004 at 16:28I’d be more sad if Powell hadn’t spent all of his credibility with me by this point.
November 15th, 2004 at 16:43Todd: Nothing, really.
Stephen: Do you really lay it all at his feet, though? Sometimes you get stuck mouthing the party line even when it’s not what you believe.

November 15th, 2004 at 16:44Yeah, but who didn’t see that one coming?
