Database Design for Mere Mortals
On the advice of my boy Gary Hampson, I picked up Database Design for Mere Mortals: A Hands-On Guide to Relational Database Design, Second Edition a while back. I finished it last night, and I can say that I’m mighty impressed.
Some may find Michael J. Hernandez’s process to be dumbed-down and tedious, but I guess it doesn’t bother me too much as a government contractor. The tools he gives are really good, and the examples are good at showing you where to go with your own projects. I think this would be useful even for folks who’re already using RDBMSs like, oh, Alex. [I actually should buy Alex a copy of this book as a thank-you for all his hard work on Tasks and WordPress.]
I have a couple projects cooking—surprise, surprise!—and this will be a big help.
Many thanks for the tip, Gary.

You’re a prince.

July 7th, 2004 at 17:27Don’t mention it. It’s title is perfect. For people who don’t work with databases as a profession, it’s a good primer. Now that your finished with that, you’re a candidate for books by Celko and Date. (And you would like to bounce any of your designs ideas off someone or would like some assistance, please remember to give me a shout.)
